St. Louis Cardinals – NFL’s Grid Birds : The St. Louis Cardinals, currently known as the Arizona Cardinals are a professional team playing American football in the National Football League and have been a part of the National Football Conference since the 1970 season.
The Cardinals were members of the of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference since 1970 to 2001 after which they were moved to the Western Division of the National Football Conference.
The team was founded in Chicago in 1898 and is only one of two remaining members of the original charter that founded the National Football League. The team took the Cardinals name in 1920 and continued as the Chicago Cardinals till 1959 except for the 1944 season when they were known as the Card-Pitt. The team moved to St. Louis in 1960 taking the St. Louis Cardinals name and played there till 1987.
The team, in its time in St. Louis has been referred to by many names including Football Cardinals to negate the chances of confusion with the Major League Baseball Cardinals team, Grid birds as well as the Cardiac birds. However, the St. Louis Cardinals moved to Phoenix in 1988 for better opportunities and took the name the Phoenix Cardinals and it has been known in its present avatar since the 1994 season.
