Walter Hagen

Walter Hagen – Golf’s Earliest Legend: Walter Hagen was one of the foremost personalities in the world of golf in the early parts of the 20th century when the sport was just beginning to make its mark in the hearts and minds of people. Hagen has won 11 Major titles in his career, a tally that is just behind the likes of Tiger Woods’ 14 and Jack Nicklaus’ 18 titles. Walter Hagen won the British Open in 1922 and thus became the first Native American to win the championship. That was the first of four subsequent British Opens that he won in his career. In all, Walter Hagen has won 45 titles on the PGA Tour, a tally that puts him tied for the eighth spot in terms of career titles won. Hagen had also been named in the Ryder Cup team of the United State on numerous occasions and had been named the captain of the team on as many as 5 occasions. In all, he has won 5 PGA Championships, which is a joint record, 4 Open Championships and also 2 US Open titles. However, his best performance at the Masters was a T-11 that he achieved in 1936. Walter Hagen will always be remembered as one of the legends of golf.
