Walter Burkemo

Walter Burkemo – The Man Remembered for the 1953 PGA Championship: Walter Burkemo is a former professional golfer from the United States of America who spent a long time playing and touring on the PGA Tour. Born in Detroit, Burkemo grew up with 12 siblings among whom he was the youngest. His first taste of golf came at the age of 8 years when he became a caddy at the Lochmoor Country Club, a professional golfers’ club in Detroit. Gradually, Walter Burkemo started to learn all the tricks of the trade by watching the professionals on the course and he earned his first title after turning professional at the Florida Open of 1938. But the glittering career was cut short by the advent of the Second World War where he served as a member of the infantry and was severely injured during the war. But he soon recovered to make a comeback in the 1940s but without any success whatsoever. However, Walter Burkemo announced his return to the professional circuit by winning the PGA Championship in 1953 and added six other professional titles to his name. Burkemo might not have been the best players of his generation but he was a model professional and his win in the PGA Championship signified his talent.
